AMOUREUX DE MONTRÉAL, LES

This film tells the city's story in every season, bathed in every kind of light, and scrutinizes it from every angle – including the least flattering. Lulled by a warm voice, we revisit the island and its banks, squares, alleyways, churches, and skyscrapers in the footsteps of "these artists who resemble us and who tell our stories:" architects. Borne by the rumour of yesteryear and the rhythms of today, with small strokes suggestive of a not-so-distant past and a future that is still somewhat worrisome, Montreal's soul is projected onto the screen, tucked into the folds of its incongruous architecture.

SILENT WITNESS

GROS-MORNE

Gripping words and images are used to portray the physical and emotional poverty of a small town in the Gaspé Peninsula. This social commentary is set in contrast to the privileged areas of Montréal, illustrating the wall of ignorance and indifference that separates the affluent from the less fortunate, even within the bounds of Québec.

ENFANCE À NATASHQUAN, UNE

In front of his house in Natashquan, Gilles Vigneault recalls a morning in late August 1942 when he left for college in Rimouski. For him, as for his sister Dadette, it marked the end of childhood and a life that was hard, yet packed with emotions, which became part of the poet's memory. Sometimes joyfully and sometimes impassionedly, he light-heartedly confides his recollections to us.

BRIDGING THE RIVER OF SILENCE

A rural community's effort to control violence against women filmed in Renfrew County during the winter and spring of 1991. Through three women's accounts of their abusive relationships the film explores the complexity of the problem and captures an impression of the coordinated efforts of a community to fight back against this ingrained violence against women. One woman's story becomes the dramatic focus as her abusive husband's trial date approaches. What is presented is a quiet portrait of a group of people trying to make the system work for women who need to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and get on with living.

DE MÈRE EN FILLE

Can a woman fully achieve self-realization while at the same time giving of herself as a mother? Filmed during an actual pregnancy, and based on a journal that the director kept during one of her own pregnancies, this documentary shows the body of a pregnant woman and reveals her emotions and worries. It gives an enlightening glimpse into what goes on inside of a woman at each stage of this major life event. The film then follows up with a report on state-run daycare centres in Czechoslovakia, seeking solutions that might help a woman to be wife, mother and individual all at once. This was the first feature-length film about women in Québec; it was released in 1967, as the feminist movement was just beginning to rise.
