But what of the crimes committed by Japan during wartime? Can all be wiped from memory as cleanly as it has been excised from history textbooks? Courageous citizens are speaking out against government censorship. They want to tell the whole story of war and thereby confront Japan with its past. The issues strike to the heart of Japan's national identity. A tale of hope.

UN TOIT, UN VIOLON, LA LUNE

A portrait of senior citizens - all musicians, painters, writers and actors - who live at the Chez-Nous des Artistes in Montréal. They may no longer have careers, and the world of the hip and successful may have forgotten them, but they continue to dream, work, flirt and hold eccentric opinions. In between concerts, passionate Scrabble(r)(r) tournaments, card games played with a large print deck, and a heartbreaking aria sung under a full moon by an opera diva who never really made it, they present tender, witty and wise insights about life. Filmmaker Carole Laganière asks tough questions about success, failure or approaching death, but respect and pleasure infuse this film.

SQUAT

Documentary about Montreal's first political squat. On July 27, 2001, squatters occupy an abandoned building on Overdale Street. The location is symbolic: about 100 renters had been evicted from it 13 years earlier in order to make space for luxury condos that were never built. Relocated to Rachel Street, the squatters take up residence to claim their right to decent housing. They want to raise awareness about the housing crisis. In the midst of a municipal election campaign, the squatting initiative unfolds under intense media scrutiny. The squatters develop an alternative plan, which is gradually subverted by the municipal government.
