Betrayed by a society that values only winners, an outstanding marathon runner who sustained numerous injuries now advocates patience. In response to the devastating effects of stress, a woman provides tailored workshops to get people to change their behaviour and cut down on their work hours. FIX: THE STORY OF AN ADDICTED CITY
Ann Livingston is the spiritually charged organizer of the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU). The situation in Vancouver’s downtown East Side is a tragedy of nightmarish proportions: addicts commit felonies and openly shoot up in the streets, heroin is 75 per cent cheaper than it is anywhere else in the country, and one person overdoses every day. Ann and her group drive around like guerrilla freedom fighters, delivering a coffin to the city council and asking for a safe injection site for addicts. Unbelievably, the conservative mayor becomes an ally. On the other hand, community business leaders and property owners, believing a safe injection site will only encourage drug use, want tougher laws. Advocates from both groups take to the streets. Is the economy more important than people’s lives? The overworked police, stuck in the middle, only have the power to maintain order and liken the situation to shovelling water.
