TRAÎTRE OU PATRIOTE
How can the premier of Quebec from 1939 to 1944 be erased from a society’s collective memory and even that of historians? Yet this was indeed the fate of Adélard Godbout, great-uncle of Jacques Godbout. Through the historic destiny of his childhood hero, Jacques Godbout asks uneasy questions about collective memory and Quebec nationalism that we cannot dodge. The case of Adélard Godbout is especially troubling. He was the precursor of the Quiet Revolution and instituted free and compulsory education. He gave women the right to vote and gave Quebec Hydro-Québec and labour laws. As a committed Christian and humanist, however, he supported war against Nazi barbarism. The ultranationalists first defeated him, and then erased him from our collective memory. As always, Jacques Godbout forces us in this film to take a fresh new look at conventional wisdom.

ROCKS AT WHISKEY TRENCH
On August 28, 1990, a convoy of 75 cars left the Mohawk community of Kahnawake and crossed Montreal’s Mercier Bridge--straight into an angry mob that pelted the vehicles with rocks. The targets of this violence were Mohawk women, children and elders leaving Kahnawake, in fear of a possible advance by the Canadian army. In ROCKS AT WHISKEY TRENCH, Mohawks young and old remember the terror as windows shattered around them. Police had orders not to arrest anyone--and though they stood by during the rock-throwing, they were able to prevent the mob from reaching the cars and attacking their occupants. ROCKS AT WHISKEY TRENCH is the fourth instalment in filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin’s landmark series on the Mohawk rebellions that shook Canada in 1990. A painstakingly researched social document, the film looks back at the events surrounding the August 28 attack, and delves into the history of Kahnawake and the consequences of the appropriation of land that have shrunk its territory by more than two-thirds over the last 300 years. Time and healing circles have helped close the wounds, but it will take much longer for Kahnawake residents to forgive and forget.

FAIRY FAITH, THE
A fairy couple tries to steal a man's shadow. Another takes a man's wife. And yet another, claims a retired police chief, braided a horse's mane! "The little people." You can shrug them off as superstition, but what explains their perennial appeal? As a boy, filmmaker John Walker learned the difference between a fairy tale and the fairy faith from his grandmother, who told him that if your heart is open, the fairies and their fabled world can be seen in the landscape. In search of this ancient belief, Walker travels to the moors of England, the Highlands of Scotland and the sacred sites of Ireland and Cape Breton. He meets a storyteller who saves an ancient fairy thorn bush from town developers, a painter who conjures up their magical features, and a Mi'kmaq elder who gives advice on how to understand the mysterious lot.
