The border town of Tijuana is a sort of refuge for lonely souls. Serena, a young widow and mother of three in her thirties, finds herself there because her husband, whom she still mourns, has left her a house and meagre inheritance. Jane, a 40-year old American woman, is there seeking adventure, while her brother, Frank, a disillusioned writer, now spends his life on the beach watching whales. All a young country boy named Felipe dreams about is living in the United States. Finally, there is Julian, Serena’s eldest child, who kills time hanging out at the border with his pals, also dreaming about leaving. This is where he meets Felipe, who will be wounded trying to cross the border illegally. The American woman buys a big old car to get Felipe and Julian across. They settle temporarily in the hotel El Jardín del Edén, where more surprises await them.
