MAIN INVISIBLE, LA

Underpinning the latest wave of economic globalization is Adam Smith’s 18th century theory of the invisible hand of individual self-interest as the driving force in free markets. And no corner of the world remains untouched by the invisible hand of this "new economy." In Guinea, multinational bauxite mining operations have brought massive machines to strip the rich red earth of its ore, which travels to the sea on endless trains, and is loaded on ships bound for Canada where it will be processed into aluminum. Bypassed by the mining operation, the people of Guinea live at the far end of the aluminum industry chain, collecting foreign-made discarded pop cans which they reforge into otherwise unaffordable life necessities - pots, pans, nails. From within this local and very visible handiwork culture, local dance and music traditions grow and reach back out to the world. Sylvain L’Espérance has chosen not to present us with a treatise on globalization, but rather to quietly and respectfully observe local ingenuity at work. Full of unexpected connections, surprising insights, high-energy song and dance, and exquisite images, this elegantly woven film celebrates creativity and embodies resistance to the brutalities of globalization’s invisible hand.

JUCHITÁN DE LAS LOCAS

The Mexican town of Juchitán is located near the Guatemalan border. According to legend, the patron saint of Juchitán carried a bag filled with “queers” on his back. Everywhere he travelled, he left behind a homosexual. In Juchitán, however, his bag came undone, and they all fell out.
There are as many imagined queer paradises as there are queers, but at least in the southern Mexican community of Juchitán that paradise is an earthly one. Local legend has it that long ago, San Vicente Ferrer, patron saint of Juchitán, traveled across Colombia, Panama and Guatemala with a bag of homosexuals, scattering them as he went. When he reached Juchitán, his bag came undone and all the homosexuals left in his bag fell out there. Since then, the native Zapotec community of Juchitán has welcomed and nurtured homosexuals (known as “muxe” ) as a gift. Exploring the lives of many of the community’s queers, from teachers and peasants to drag queens and hustlers, Patricio Henríquez offers us a lively and thoughtful portrait of true diversity, tolerance and integration.

FOLLES NUITS

ACTION THE OCTOBER CRISIS OF 1970

A long and thoughtful look at those desperate days of October 1970, when Montréal awaited the outcome of FLQ terrorist acts. This film puts the October Crisis in the long perspective of history. Compiled from news and other films, it shows independence movements past and present, and their leaders; it reflects the mingled relief, dismay, defiance, when the Canadian army came to Montréal; and it shows how political leaders viewed the intervention.
