2002
Guixiang is married to Changgeng, a good-for-nothing gambler. One particularly ill-fated day, all her wares are confiscated by the police, her husband is sent to jail for blinding a fellow gambler and the parents of a girl she is nursing abandon their daughter. The authorities force Guixiang to return to her native town, the little wailing girl at tow. As she scrounges for money to bail out her husband, she discovers a talent to cry and decides to become a professional mourner for the rich recently deceased.
