FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

A family can take many forms, whether as a tightly-knit "traditional" rural family in Newfoundland, a single mother and her daughter in Montreal, a same-sex couple with three children in New Brunswick, or a large "blended" family in Toronto. This video takes us on an intimate journey into the homes and lives of seven families across Canada, challenging our views about what family is and what it will be in generations to come. The classroom version features an access menu at the beginning of the program and locator codes throughout.

FAT CHANCE

The first thing people notice about Rick Zakowich is his size. Creative therapist by day and blues singer by night, Rick’s charisma and talent are undeniable, yet he remains fixed within the definition of a narrow label. The film began when Rick set out to change all that. But things didn’t turn out as planned...instead of being a half-hour film about a 400-pound guy trying to lose 220 pounds, FAT CHANCE turned out to be a feature-length documentary about a 400-pound guy who hasn’t lost weight but has gained self-confidence.

ELLES S'APPELLENT TOUTES SARAJEVO

March 1994. Sarajevo is a city held hostage by the surrounding hills and resists the shower of shells that rains down on it. It is afraid, cold, hungry, lives in the dark and sleeps in caves without running water and suffers every difficulty. Seven women witness this hell. They tell of numerous shortages, how hard daily life is, the inability to work at their occupations and a future that has been assassinated. And they don’t mention what we all know: in this chaotic world, the children remain. Their own and all those of this martyred, new order capital, as hope and perhaps pardon, lie with the children – when this endless agony ceases, and if summer returns to Sarajevo after the long winter of barbarity.

DUCEPPE

An impressive portrait of Jean Duceppe, his career and achievements. Multi-talented and versatile, Duceppe left his mark on theatre and cinema as well as radio and television. A number of the characters he created are now part of our collective memory. But Jean Duceppe was not just an actor. The documentary also retraces the many facets of his tireless union work, his work as a businessman, radio and television host, political activist, artistic director and publisher. The youngest of a family of 18 children and himself the father of seven, this immensely talented artist was a simple man who was funny and sensitive alike, at times angry and always generous. He was also committed, having a ringside seat in the battle for Quebec’s culture and identity, and was angered by all the injustices. An ardent nationalist, Jean Duceppe was the artistic director most open to American theatre, which he had translated and adapted to Quebec’s situation.
