CHILE, LA MEMORIA OBSTINADA

Remembering against forgetting. Because time is running out. A generation of young Chileans has grown up not knowing the facts surrounding the September 11, 1973 coup-d’état. That day, Salvador Allende’s elected socialist democrat party government is overturned by General Pinochet. That day, Juan was to be married. He nearly dies fighting the dictator’s troops. With him, Patricio Guzman returns to Chile for the first time, 23 years later as the time has come to tell a hidden truth. In his bags he carries a film on the battle of Chile, which is a major document on the experience of an open and peaceful revolution. At the time, the film had been around the world but was still banned in Chile. The filmmaker discretely shows it to his loved ones, and has young people discover it. Survivors of the drama recognize their “disappeared” friends, speaking about their courage and love of life. After the screening, a small gathering of students is in a state of shock. Their thirst for the truth is unquenchable. Through them the repressed feelings of an entire people seem to blossom. They feel invested with an historic duty. They are the ones who will create the Chile of tomorrow.

LAINE DU PAYS, LA

From sheep farming to a wool suit, this film recreates the stages, vocabulary and old-fashioned techniques of a process that has for the most part been forgotten: shearing, carding (at the old Bernier mill in Saint-Aubert), spinning, weaving, dying, and fabrication of clothing, sheets and blankets. This is all topped off with a special atmosphere and philosophy that were particular to this 'brave' era, before commercialism took over small family businesses.
