Gaston, trompettiste à son déclin, revient de Cleveland. Son retour à Montréal plonge Florence, qui l'aime en vain, dans le ravissement mais laisse Gaston insensible à son charme, comme elle est insensible à celui de ses 40 derniers amants, inconsolables, qui la suivent partout. Pire, Gaston s'éprend de Soledad, la fille de Florence qui est comédienne, et tente de la consoler de l'infidélité de son amoureux, Tibo. Il tarde pourtant à lui déclarer sa flamme. Aussi, les amis de Gaston le menottent-ils un soir à Soledad, avant l'entrée en scène de celle-ci. Le public est enchanté. Florence est déchirée. Et Tibo, qui donne la réplique à Soledad dont il est toujours amoureux, est brisé. Le dénouement sera tragique mais devant la stèle funéraire, Florence et Soledad retrouveront leur complicité dans un fou rire libérateur.
