On September 30, 1991, a coup d'état forced President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, democratically elected by over two thirds of Haitians, into exile. After escaping from an arranged death, a number of countries welcomed him with all due honours. In Canada, politicians reserved the greatest sollicitude for him.
