In August 1863, a legless and mute young man ends up on the shore of l’Anse-de-Sable. He is taken in by Jean, called “The Corsican” and his wife, Juliette, a young, resilient Acadian. The couple, who have been married for two years, despair of ever having a child. Juliette develops a fondness for the invalid, whom she names Jérôme and showers him with all her pent up maternal love. Jean is bitter and jealous and no longer has but one dream: to return to Corsica. To gather the necessary funds for the trip, he organizes tours for the villagers who are curious to see the mysterious young man. Cyrille, the pharmacist and Molidje, a beautiful Mi’kmaq, hover around the couple. Jean the Corsican tries to have a child with Molidje to learn in the end that he is sterile. He proposes that the pharmacist be his substitute with Juliette to give her a child. It is the young woman’s intervention that will make it possible for the dilemma to be resolved, with Jean at the centre of the conclusion.
