On August 11, 1792, Danton was appointed Minister of Justice and on August 13, the King and his family were imprisoned. The September massacres preceded the victory of the French armies in Valmy. The Republic was proclaimed. Louis XVI was executed at the guillotine in January 1793. In July, Robespierre began a reign of terror. Danton, Desmoulins and the other Girondins were deemed to be overindulgent and were executed at the guillotine in April 1794. Finally, Robespierre and his cohort St. Just were executed as well on July 28 that same year.
