PARTITION is a picturesque Canadian-produced romantic melodrama set against historical backdrop of the 1947 British withdrawal from India. One of the British-designed policies at the dawn of Indian post-colonial independence, was regional segregation of population along religious lines into Hindu-dominated India and Muslim-dominated Pakistan. The policy led to huge migrations of people to either side of the partitioning. With it came religious intolerance, tensions and mistrust, which, eventually, lead to senseless massacres and fear of revenge on both sides. PARTITION is a tragic story about the forbidden love between two young people entagled in this climate of wide-ranging social change in India. Gian, a former Sikh soldier of the British Indian Army falls in love Naseem, a battered young Muslim girl who has narrowly escaped massacre on the long march to Pakistan. The two are despised by the grief-stricken residents of Gian's village. And, even though the scandalous inter-religious relationship between Gian and Naseem eventually becomes more tolerated in the Sikh village, Naseem's trip to Islamic Pakistan in search of her own missing family, tears the two lovers apart in this Canadian version of South Asian Romeo and Juliet.
