ONE HEART BROKEN INTO SONG is a made-for-TV feature film based on a script by the award-winning Nova Scotia writer George Elliott Clarke. Set in a small African-Canadian community of Whylah Falls during the Depression era, the film tells a story of Lyla Cromwell, an attractive god-fearing romantic who lives in an impoverished patriarchal family and escapes the harsh realities of life by writing beautiful poetry. One summer, Lyla falls in love with Hank Johnson, a conceited young smooth-talker who looks down on the local men and their harsh and perilous work at the nearby mine. Against her family wishes, Lyla runs away with Hank, settling in a poverty-stricken community on the outskirts of Halifax. In the city, things do not go as well as the couple had hoped. Hank and Lyla try to grapple with the social problems facing them, but their dreams eventually get shattered once Hank realizes he cannot get a high-paying job he had fantasized about. Disillusioned, Hank finds comfort with another woman. Lyla, brokenhearted and depressed, goes back home and is taken in by her overprotective Uncle Hud. When Hank returns to see his sweetheart again, a horrible tragedy ensues. This film is a rare glimpse into the culture of Canadian black community situated during the Depression-era. At the same time, it is a universal romantic story of life, love, and loss.
