The varied, moving and sometimes contradictory accounts of expatriate Quebeckers in New York highlight the difficultly of being accepted in the American megalapolis' various artistic and financial environments, which are often as impenetrable as a private club. The clash is just as violent when it comes to personal life. The expats portrayed, be they artists, psychiatrists or businesspeople, all share a passionate relationship with this city and all that is simulating, attractive, and excessive about it. Some of them have lived in the city for 20 years; others are just arriving. Some of them had wanted to leave, but without ever managing to do so. The filmmaker seeks to identify the nature of their attachment to New York, as well as the reasons behind this desire for exile. As a counterpoint, the camera explores the city's architecture and texture by incorporating a fictional video story. Images of the poor illustrate the other side of the fascination exerted by this city where anything can happen.
