Mr. Ripois is an errant figure, tragic and poignant at the same time. He is dispossessed of himself and plagued by an unrelenting pursuit of transcendence. But he is also a despicable strategist of seduction, an egocentric schemer who observes the lover's effusion with suave cruelty, like so many truncated exchanges. He conquers hearts, he embraces bodies, but the heady pleasures of the flesh give off the acrid perfume of ashes. We know nothing of the reasons for this infirmity of feeling, other than it can wreak death in its path and that its ransom is despair. Nonetheless, for a brief moment, the sparkle of a young musician sets his hard heart a-flutter. He even has a brush with regret, which disrupts an existence that life itself abandoned long ago.
