107 minutes, 1991

Léolo, a young boy, lives a cramped existence with his family in a Montreal slum tenement. With surprising clarity of mind, he writes down his thoughts on this sordid world. Renouncing his origins, he claims to come from Sicily, an idyllic paradise of wide open spaces. Members of his family are in and out of the mental hospital, and Léolo feels that he himself is also threatened by madness. He seeks refuge in his love for Bianca, a young Italian neighbour who reveals transcendence to him. Why is he the only one to see the difference between a plastic rose and the beauty of a real flower, and between lies and poetry? The words Léolo writes also become a refuge for him. But only a Word Tamer, an art lover symbolizing the power of imagination for him, understands the value of his texts.
