In Canada’s Far North, Paul Weyman, a zoologist, discovers a German shepherd dog beside the body of a police officer that was escorting two prisoners. After his master’s death, Kazan has become vicious and is to be put down but is saved at the last moment by Jo-Ann, who has just married Frank. The couple takes the dog to the forest where he settles into the cabin built by the young woman’s father. But following an ambush, the dog runs away and returns to life in the wild. He joins a wolf pack and becomes their leader. He finds a companion, Louve-Grise. In the depths of winter, he once again crosses paths with Jo-Ann and her baby, who have been attacked by wolves. Now Kazan divides his life between his human friends and Louve-Grise, who has been left blind from a cougar attack. When the couple returns to civilization to have their land certified, Kazan goes back to the Far North with Louve-Grise. A trapper who is escorting Weyman, who has been sent by the government to study the wildlife then captures the two animals.
