The action takes place in Duvalier's Haiti during a bloody era marked by the disappearance of many families. At Port-à-Piment, the parents of eight-year-old Sarah and her two sisters have fallen from favour, and they leave their daughters with their grandmother, Camille. After a series of ordeals, the young girls must flee the vengeance of Janvier who, impulsive and violent, represents the new social order. From their hiding place, an attic looking out over the barracks, Sarah witnesses atrocities that will scar her for life. To escape this hell, she takes refuge in her inner world filled with mysterious rituals. Her life centres on her godfather Gracieux, a begger who is not as crazy as he seems, her grandmother Camille, married to a man whom she doesn't love, and Assad, the Syrian, who tries to save them.
