Aimée, 28-years-old, puts her job in an employment agency to use investigating eligible bachelors: she will stop at nothing to end her life of monotony and start living off a husband. She sets her sights on Maurice, a 35-year-old bookseller who is an unrepentant lover of women. But then her beau loses his job. Aimée must abandon her plans, but a bond has formed between her and Maurice that turns into friendship. Finally, she meets Malcolm, a renowned food writer who marries her and introduces her to society. There, Aimée snags the ideal partner for Maurice, a spirited businesswoman who helps him overcome his financial woes. But in exchange for material comfort and social respectability, Aimée loses some of her freedom and illusions.
