This lyrical coming-of-age drama is a story of Terry Fleming, a handsome 16-year old dreamer. It is set in Newfoundland, in 1945, during the final days of the Second World War. Terry spends most of his time in his private world of fantasy, daydreaming about waiting tables at the Airlines Hotel in Gander, "Gateway to the World at War", a rather unlikely outpost for pilots, public figures, and movie stars. When the teenager's mother becomes gravely ill and their home is quarantined, the boy's coping mechanisms fill his fantasy universe with intrigue, romance, and even spy mystery. As the story shifts between "real life" and fantasy, the film alternates between different styles: from photographic realism, expressionistic film-noir like atmosphere, oversaturated colours and stylized characters, to still photographs, both black and white and colour, serving as the background in some of the scenes. HEYDAY! also incorporates archival footage from the Second World War.
