Will Donnelly has not talked since the death of his mother six months earlier - even after his father, sister Emily, and he move to Willow Springs to begin a new life. One day Will meets a magical, talking goose he names Randall and eventually he begins to speak again. However, Randall the Goose is in danger of being cooked by Congreve Maddox, the peculiar principal of Will's school. Will, Emily, and other children kidnap Congreve's mother from the train station in an attempt to save the goose, but she proves to be no little old lady.
