Nineteen-year-old Smitty, sentenced to six months in a Canadian jail for a minor drug offence, finds himself sharing a cell with the outrageously homosexual Queenie, the strong and silent Rocky, and the downtrodden, wretched Mona. Angrily rejecting Queenie's advances, and confident that he can take care of himself, Smitty finds himself about to be subjected to gang rape by sex-starved convicts. He is saved by Rocky, whom he looks upon as his friend until he realises that Rocky is now his old man and that he is expected to submit to nightly bouts of sodomy. Rather than risk gang rape again, he does submit; but goaded on by Queenie, he finally attacks Rocky and beats him in a fight, thus freeing himself. The humiliated Rocky, in solitary confinement after the fight, commits suicide. Queenie causes a scandal during the Christmas entertainment, attended by the warden and his wife, by stripping stark naked as a climax to his drag act. Smitty, relishing his new-found prestige, tries to bulldoze his way into becoming Mona's old man. The gentle, sensitive Mona reveals that he could remain inwardly untouched by his humiliations because they were perpetrated by people he cared nothing about. However, he loves Smitty and finally opens Smitty's eyes to the brutalisation he is undergoing.
