In an nondescript rural village close to a major highway Coralie lives alone with her father, her mother having been placed in an asylum. Pierrot, a Frenchman who has just come out of prison, comes to stay with them. He tells Coralie that he loves her and wants to take her with him when he leaves for France but she rejects him. Without money, life is hard for Coralie and her father, while they stay in their village, which is a controlled by a family of petty criminals.
