Almost from their beginning, comic books have been surrounded by controversy. But 'corruptor of youth' or no, the sheer vitality of the popular art form has kept it alive. And now, in the late 1980s, comic books are flourishing in a way they never have before. The film profiles 22 of the most significant artists and writers working in comic books, graphic novels and strip-art in North America today. From Jack Kirby's Captain America and the superhero fervour of the war years, through Will Eisner's cinematic The Spirit to the witch-hunts of the fifties and the irreverent Mad magazine, the film traces both the origins and the progress of comic books. Using the recollections and present-day experiences of the industry's most creative people, along with sometimes amusing, sometimes amazing archival footage, this is informative and entertaining foray into pop culture. Participants and featured artists: Lynda Barry, Charles Burns, Sue Coe, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, Al Feldstein, Sherry Flenniken, William M. Gaines, Bill Griffith, Jaime Hernandez, Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, Stan Lee, Paul Mavrides, Frank Miller, Victor Moscoso, Françoise Mouly, Dan O'Neill, Harvey Pekar, Gilbert Shelton, Spain, Art Spiegelman.
