In Paris, on the evening of March 27, 1959, Alain arrives home from the movies with his 10 year old brother Marius, and on his bed are his travel orders for Algeria, where he must perform his military service. His fiancee Lou has just announced that she is pregnant. Alain is shattered. He decides to flee to Belgium. But he is caught by the police and must go to Algeria. His younger brother Marius continues to go see movies, dreaming of the military life that his brother is leading. He reads to Lou all of the letters that he receives from Algeria. The operation that Alain is involved in goes badly and he escapes to Tunisia where he joins a group that opposes the war. On November 27, 1959, Marius goes to the hospital with Lou... Gérard Philipe has just died, and the baby is named Gérard in his honour.
