A rural community's effort to control violence against women filmed in Renfrew County during the winter and spring of 1991. Through three women's accounts of their abusive relationships the film explores the complexity of the problem and captures an impression of the coordinated efforts of a community to fight back against this ingrained violence against women. One woman's story becomes the dramatic focus as her abusive husband's trial date approaches. What is presented is a quiet portrait of a group of people trying to make the system work for women who need to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and get on with living.
