BON COP BAD COP is the first Canadian feature film presented in both official languages - English and French. Bilingualism itself is at the centre of the film's comedy, which revolves around the concept of two cultures and languages clashing in a uniquely Canadian way. The film pokes fun at various Ontarian/English and Québecois/French stereotypes, playfully subverting the familiar dichotomies embodied in the film's two main protagonists: Martin Ward, an English-speaking policeman from Toronto, and David Bouchard, a French-speaking cop from Montreal. One is boring/uncool, the other is fun-loving/cool; one is calculated/uptight, the other is impulsive/spontaneous; one is polished, the other is rugged; one is refined, the other is macho; one is neat, the other is messy; one is working class, the other attended Upper Canada College; one is into health, the other could not care less about a healthy lifestyle; one presses his own trousers, the other wears jeans; one lives by the rules of law, the other has his own rules. This adrenaline-filled buddy-cop comedy starts when a dead body is found straddling the Ontario - Quebec border. The rule-bending francophone detective working for for the Sûreté du Québec and the proper, by-the-book anglophone detective from the Ontario Provincial Police are forced to join forces to solve the murder. The detectives soon find out that they are hunting a serial killer whose targets are linked by Canada's national pastime: hockey. They also realize that, beside the murders, something else needs to be resolved, and that is their own personal, professional and cultural differences, and with them, their bigotry and prejudices.
