A story of the friendship between a Canadian soldier and a bear cub, a cub that eventually inspired the beloved A.A. Milne character, Winnie the Pooh. In August 1914 Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, a veterinarian with the 34th Fort Garry Horse Division, buys a bear cub at a rest stop while his division travels by train to a camp in Québec where the Canadian expeditionary force is gathering. Naming her after his hometown of Winnipeg, Winnie the Bear is a breath of fresh air for the men in the camp and she travels with them all the way to Salisbury Plain in England. When Harry's regiment is sent to France, Harry knows that Winnie cannot go with them and he makes arrangements for Winnie to stay at the London Zoo where she soon becomes the star attraction.
