ALL HAT is a feature drama that plays as a modern western set in the world of thoroughbred horse racing. The film is an adaptation of Brad Smith's country-noir novel about faith, redemption and evening the score - not strictly in a prescribed order. Ray Dokes, a former convict and ex-ballplayer returns home, only to discover the countryside of his childhood changed. Urban development spreads across the rural landscape like cancer. Determined to stay out of trouble, Ray heads to the ranch of his old friend Pete, a cowboy whose debts are growing in a near-record time. Sonny Stanton, spoiled beneficiary of a pure-bred dynasty, is buying up the entire concession of farmland with the goal of building a resort and golf course. The only soul courageous enough to complicate his plans is Etta Parr, Ray's old flame, who owns one of the farms Sonny is after. Ray hooks up with Chrissie, a talented jockey and tries to steer clear of Sonny. When Sonny's extremely valuable horse disappears, however, he forces the vending of the community's remaining farms. This, in turn, prompts Ray to come up with a scheme to halt Sonny in his tracks once and for all, knowing full well that one wrong move will land him back in prison.
