This 2008 science fiction comedy from writer-producer Josh Miller uses well-worn generic conventions in order to touch lightly on questions about what makes Canada tick. We all know the plot: washed up hero is re-animated by a personal goal (his coach and his dog have been killed) and saves the world from an alien invader, thereby redeeming himself and getting “the girl” in the end.

DARK HOURS, THE

Dr. Samantha Goodman, a psychiatrist, joins her husband and sister for a weekend at a winter cottage when an unexpected guest arrives and changes everything. Harlan Payne, a violent sexual offender, is convinced that Dr. Goodman conducted unethical experiments on him while he was being treated by her. With the help of his troubled yet eager friend, Harlan forces Samantha and her family to partake in a series of nightmarish psychological games designed to bring out the truth and reap vengeance.
