ALIAS WILL JAMES

How did a writer from Québec become a famous American novelist and the most authentic cowboy in Hollywood? By telling stories. Will James, cattle rustler, vagabond, artist and writer, became a legendary figure of the American West. He was born in Montana, to an Irish-Hispanic mother and a Texan father. In reality, Ernest Dufault was born in Saint-Nazaire d’Acton, Québec. With the loyal support of his family, Ernest succeeded in seducing and tricking European royalty and the American public for thirty years.

In 1838, the Société des Vingt-et-un, established in Malbaie, began development of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, which up until then had been controlled by the Hudson’s Bay Company. Forestry was the main objective. Colonization, supported by the clergy, accelerated occupation of the area. The history of this region comes alive through drawings, engravings, photographs and archive footage explained by a local historian.
